One of the biggest distractions in digital marketing is the constant obsession with creating something new.
So many businesses believe that growth requires a relentless content treadmill, churning out new articles, new videos, and new posts day after day. But what if I told you that you're likely sitting on a gold mine of existing data that's just waiting to be tapped?
Most people use Google Search Console for a surface-level check-up.
They see if their website is working and if their pages are being indexed. That’s important, but it's like owning a supercar and only ever driving it to the grocery store. The real power is hidden in the “Performance” tab.
There's a common saying in the SEO world: "The best place to hide a dead body is on page two of Google's search results."
Why? Because almost no one ever goes there. The vast majority of clicks go to the top few results on page one. The thing is, you might have valuable pages ranking on page two right now—in positions 11, 12, or 13—just outside the spotlight.
These pages are within "striking distance." Google is already picking them up, indexing them, and showing them to users. The algorithm already sees your content as relevant to the query; it just needs a little more convincing to push it onto the first page where all the action happens.
We put this strategy to work a few weeks ago for a local physiotherapy clinic. They were ranking around number 12 or 13 for the high-value search term "physiotherapy near me." They were close, but not close enough.
Instead of creating a new blog post, we focused on what was already working.
We simply updated the existing page's title and meta description to make it more compelling and click-worthy. Then, we added some additional details, including a small FAQ section, to the page itself to better answer user questions.
The page jumped to a consistent position of number four or five on page one.
This small change more than doubled the clicks from that single page, driving real customers to their business.
Your 3-Step Plan to Find and Optimize Hidden Gems
Ready to find your own ranking opportunities? Here’s a simple, three-step process you can follow to turn your page-two content into page-one winners.
Step 1: Find Your "Striking Distance" Pages
First, you need to identify the right pages to work on. These are your low-hanging fruit.
Go to GSC Performance and look for queries where your average position is 10 to 15.
Step 2: Audit the Pages for Quick Improvements
Once you’ve identified a query, click on it, and then switch to the "Pages" tab to see which URL is ranking for that term.
Now, visit that page and put yourself in the shoes of the searcher. Does this page do the best possible job of answering their query?
You’ll probably find 5-10 ways to improve it. The goal isn’t a complete rewrite; it’s about making it incrementally better.
Step 3: Make It 20% Better
After your audit, pick a few of the highest-impact, lowest-effort improvements and implement them. You don't need to rewrite the whole thing. The goal is to make the page just 20% better.
This might involve adding a new heading, updating your meta description for a higher click-through rate, or add some betters images with a descriptive alt-tags.
Once you’ve made your changes, use Google Search Console's "URL Inspection" tool to request a re-index. This tells Google to come back and look at your improvements sooner.
That's the entire strategy. It's about focusing on what you already have.
I guarantee that if you invest some time in making your "striking distance" pages just a little bit better, a few of them will hit page one and start driving significant traffic—much faster than trying to create something entirely from scratch.
